Asthma is an inflammatory airway disease that affects about 5% of the adult population. The Asthma Clinic was established in Singapore General Hospital in March 1993. It involves a multidisciplinary team of respiratory physicians, pharmacists, respiratory technicians and nurses.

The aim of the clinic is to help asthma patients achieve a better understanding of their condition and to optimise their asthma medication.Patients are encouraged to play a more active role in the management of their asthma.

The department is one of 6 centres involved in the Ministry of Health's National Programme for Asthma.

The following are emphasised over an average of 3 visits to the clinic:

1. Asthma Action Plan

This is formulated with 4 objectives:

  • To help patients recognise symptoms of an asthma attack
  • To educate patients so that they know when their condition is deteriorating
  • To counsel patients on how to avoid an attack
  • To teach patients how to handle an asthmatic attack

    2. Inhaler Technique

    3. Roles of Medications (relievers and preventors)
