The Department of Renal Medicine has a long heritage of excellent clinical service, on a backdrop of teaching with clinical and basic research. It provides consultancy services to 2 of the major general hospitals in Singapore and receives consultations from patients not only within Singapore but from the ASEAN region and beyond. Its mission continues to be provision of world class clinical services along with the research in both basic and clinical sciences.
The Department sees a wide range of renal disorders from the early phases of renal disease to patients newly presenting with end stage renal disease. It maintains the most comprehensive nephrological service in Singapore. The various sub-specialty services include:
Clinical Nephrology
Pre- End Stage Renal Disease Clinic
- Provides consultations on management of all aspects of chronic renal disease.
- Consultancy includes dietary referrals, ESRD counselling, psychological profiling and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring services
Hypertension Service
Acute Renal Failure Service
- Provides acute renal replacement therapy for critically ill intensive care unit (ICU) patients requiring acute renal support.
- Dialytic therapy offered in the ICU includes
- intermittent haemodialysis - continuous renal replacement therapy ( e.g. venovenous haemofiltration)
Chronic Renal Failure Service
- Initiates dialysis for chronic renal failure patients with end stage renal disease
- 20-station Dialysis Centre providing regular outpatient dialysis
- Provides inpatient haemodialysis for patients from other dialysis centres
Peritoneal Dialysis Service
Renal Transplantation Service
- Evaluates suitable recipients and donors
- Investigation and treatment of patients with transplant rejection and complications
- Education programme for transplant recipients
