The Department is also proud of its Laboratory Services which provides routine and specialised haematological services to government hospitals and clinics, ministries, private clinics and laboratories. It also processes and interprets all bone marrow studies and undertakes immunophenotyping, cytogenetic work and specialised molecular studies in haematology. It is fully accredited by the ASCP (USA) and RCPath (Australia).
The laboratory is run under the supervision of the Consultants in our Department with one Assistant Manager, four Scientific Officers, seven Medical Technologists and numerous other Laboratory Technicians. It has acquired some state of the art equipment including a four colour flow cytometer with cell sorting capability and quantitative PCR analysis. Facilities for cryopreservation of bone marrow and cord blood are also being used. The laboratory is constantly improving on its hardware as well as on the technical skills of its staff.
