INTRODUCTION

As a major teaching hospital that is affiliated to the National University of Singapore, SGH provides undergraduate medical training programmes for medical students. Each year, medical students in their 3rd, 4th and 5th year of study are attached to the hospital for their clinical postings as part of their curriculum.

In addition, the Hospital also accepts, through the University and on direct application basis, medical students from overseas medical schools for elective postings as Special Clinical Students. These students come from various countries, including UK, Germany, Australia and New Zealand. The elective postings may range from a minimum period of two (2) weeks to a maximum of twelve (12) weeks.

In recognition of the Hospital's teaching role, the University and the Ministry of Health have appointed a senior clinician in SGH to be the Associate Dean. The Associate Dean supervises the medical teaching programmes, assesses the progress of trainees and serves as a mentor to the trainees. About 48% of SGH's clinicians are also appointed as clinical faculty of the University.

The Hospital, with its comprehensive range of medical specialties and broad patient base, offers a very challenging learning environment for medical students. Students have the opportunities to be attached to the following specialty areas:
