The Speech Therapy Department is a specialised discipline that deals with the assessment, diagnosis and management of swallowing disorders, and a range of communication deficits present in adult and child patients. These include concerns that arise in any of the following areas:
Language
Difficulty in understanding or using spoken or written messages.
Speech
Difficulty with the production and / or pronunciation of sounds.
Voice
Disorder of the voice resulting from vocal misuse or abuse, or other medical conditions.
Stuttering
Disorder of fluency where there is an interruption in the flow of their speech characterised by repetition of sounds, words or by complete speech blocks.
Swallowing
Difficulties in chewing or swallowing solids or liquids.
Hearing Loss
Speech and language difficulties associated with a hearing impairment.
The department provides both inpatient and outpatient services for the range of communication and swallowing disorders.
