RADIATION SAFETY AWARENESS COURSE


Objective(s)

This course aims to

•  Provide participants with a basic understanding of radiobiology and how radiation doses are minimised in diagnostic radiology for the protection of staff and patients

•  Increase participants’ awareness of radiation safety in the workplace and schemes of work which are in place in designated controlled areas in the department


Course Outline

•  Radiation Terminology
•  Basic radiobiology - how radiation interacts with tissues
•  Introduction to the production of X-rays
•  Assessment of radiation risks and radiation doses in Radiology
•  Principles of radiation protection
•  Reduction of radiation doses to staff and patient
•  Hospital radioactive waste procedures
•  Hospital radiation safety manual

For Whom / Pre-requisites

Medical Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Allied Health professionals who work in a radiation environment and healthcare workers whose daily work involve assisting the patients, radiographers and radiologists in X-ray procedure rooms
