Dietetics is a specialised discipline of applying scientifically proven nutrition knowledge to the prevention, treatment and management of diseases, while nutrition is the study of how the food we eat affects our health and well-being.
What does a Dietitian do? Dietitians provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for patients who require specific nutrition intervention to augment their medical treatment. MNT includes the assessment of a patient’s nutrition status followed by appropriate nutrition intervention.
Assessment An in-depth assessment of the patient’s medical, diet and social history; biochemical, anthropometric and clinical data.
Nutrition Intervention
Nutrition intervention may include:
• Counselling and education with regards to good nutritional intake • Educating and training patients on the specific therapeutic restrictions relative to the different medicalconditions e.g. cancer, diabetes, high blood cholesterol / lipids, high blood pressure, kidney disease, malnutrition etc • Supplementing intake with nutritional formulas for patients who are not eating well • Prescribing alternative nutrition feeding modalities e.g. tube feeding, intravenous feeding (total parenteral nutrition) etc
Medical Nutrition Therapy MNT consultation can be on an individual or group basis for the following:
• Individual Basis - Diabetes - Hyperlipidemia - Dialysis treatment - Cancer - Eating disorders - Dysphagia - Trauma & Burns - Weight Management - Renal failure - Post-organ transplants - Gout - Constipation - Anaemia - Any other nutrition-related condition
• Group Basis - Diabetes Education - Nutrition for Post-Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery Patients - Cardiac Rehabilitation Nutrition Series - Nutrition for Eating Disorder Patients - Antenatal Classes
Patient Services We provide dietetic services to patients in the Singapore General Hospital, National Heart Centre and National Cancer Centre. Patients are referred from the various disciplines, polyclinics and General Practitioners.
Patients are seen at ward level and the following outpatient clinics: • Dietitian’s main Clinic (L Clinic) • Diabetes Clinic (Diabetes Centre) • Renal Clinic (L Clinic) • Cardiac Clinic at National Heart Centre • Nutrition Support Clinic (L Clinic) • Gestational Diabetes Clinic (Diabetes Centre) • Weight Management Clinic (Diabetes Centre)
The SGH Dietitians also reach out to patients who require home therapy under our community dietetics programmes.
Professional Development
Our Dietitians receive ongoing professional development and continuing education through: • local and overseas conferences, workshops and seminars • overseas clinical placements at world-renowned hospitals/institutions for dietetics specialty training • updates by invited Dietetic experts • regular journal updates
Training
Dietitians are also actively involved in: • providing training to overseas Dietetics and Nutrition students on placement • providing clinical attachment in certain specialties for Dietitians in the region • conducting lectures on nutrition management of diseases to medical, paramedical and nursing teams
Research
Research projects are carried out within the department and in collaboration with the medical team on an ongoing basis. It is part of our commitment to provide the best quality nutrition care.
