Essential Counselling skills

Introduction

Being able to effectively apply counselling skills is a valuable asset for any career that involves helping and guiding others to improve the quality of their lives, be it in healthcare, education, social work, human resource,  or any area of work involving people development.

This course focuses on the process of helping relationships, as well as the development of individual self-awareness to be more effective in counselling.  It provides clear and employable insights into the many skills involved so that you understand exactly what helping others entails, what personal qualities are needed and how to render effective help through counselling. 

This workshop will unravel to you the essential nuts and bolts of couselling, from understanding what counselling is about, to acquiring effective counselling skills, and applying a problem-solving structure in the counselling process to facilitate good intervention. Different methodologies including role plays will be used to bring home the range of counselling skill sets.


Objectives

This course aims to
· Provide training in the use of counselling skills
· Identify the range of attitudes, behaviours and skills when working with different people
· Apply problem-solving technique in a safe and supportive environment
· Discuss the ethical and practical implications

Our Trainers

Siti Mariam Binte Mohamad Salim
Medical Social Worker, SGH

Bachelor of Arts & Social Sciences, National University of Singapore, Diploma in Counselling Practice, Counselling & Care Centre

Siti has been a Medical Social Worker since Oct 2002. She works with patients with chronic diseases and Colorectal cancer.

Her current work in SGH includes counselling patients and their families, particularly those having difficulties managing their diseases and end-of-life issues.
She provides corporate training in stress management and coping with chronic diseases.  She has experience managing volunteers and organising groups.


Olivia Khoo Ruey Lin
Senior Medical Social Worker, SGH


Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons Social Work), National University of Singapore, Diploma in Counselling Practice, Counselling & Care Centre

Olivia works with oncology patients with specialisation in haematological disorders such as Leukaemia. Her work requires her to provide grief
counselling to patients and their families upon the diagnosis and prognosis of the illness.

She has provided varied specialty training for patients and supervision in counselling and other clinical skills to healthcare professionals, undergraduates and students. She conducts training at the SGH Alice Lee Institute of Advanced Nursing and provides undergraduate supervision with the National University of Singapore. She also provides corporate training in stress management and conducts talks for schools and the various governmental organisations.


Target Participants

For healthcare professionals including nurses, doctors, dieticians, psychologists, social workers, Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist.
