BASIC ENTERAL NUTRITION & FEEDING WORKSHOPIntroduction Malnutrition is often an unrecognised risk in hospitalised or nursing home patients. 40-55% of hospitalised patients are likely to be malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. Nutritional status may be further compromised in hospitals or nursing homes due to poor feeding. Nurses and Healthcare Assistants are actively involved in feeding patients, be it serving meals or feeding via the tube. Enteral Nutrition is the delivery of nutrients directly into the stomach, duodenum or jejunum. As these healthcare professionals play an important role in ensuring that the feeds are delivered correctly, it is important that they are equipped with core competency skills in basic enteral nutrition. This will help reduce the risk of malnutrition in long term-hospitalised patients or Nursing Home residents. Nutrition support should be an integral part of patient care as this has been shown to improve patient outcomes and thus reduce costs.ObjectivesThis workshop aims to equip participants with core competency skills in basic enteral nutrition with emphasis on enteral feeding and its potential complications. The workshop will cover basic nutrition screening and provide a hands-on session with the various enteral feeds commonly used for patients on tube feeding.TrainerThe workshop will be conducted by a qualified Dietitian from the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition Services.Workshop Outline Nutrition and its Core Components Nutrition Screening Enteral Nutrition Enteral Feeds/Products Enteral Feeding and its Complications On completion of the workshop, participants will be aware of the causes and problems of malnutrition, and the importance of providing appropriate enteral nutrition.
