We will put several cases up on this website over the next few months. Please do look at them and let us know what you think when you come for the course! We hope you enjoy them, just as we have enjoyed putting them together.
Case history
A 61 year old Chinese female without any significant past medical history presented with a palpable mass at the upper outer quadrant of the right breast of uncertain duration.
Mammography revealed an asymmetrical density in the upper outer quadrant of the right breast, corresponding to the palpable lump. There was no associated suspicious microcalcification or architectural distortion. The left breast was unremarkable. Ultrasonography disclosed an ill-defined, 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.2 cm irregular heterogeneous mass at 0800-0900, located 3.5 cm from the nipple, with a thick echogenic rim and posterior acoustic shadowing. At the 0900 position, 2 cm from the nipple, there was a heterogenous nodule 1.3 x 0.8 x 0.5 cm with slightly irregular, ill-defined margins, deemed radiologically indeterminate.
There was no axillary adenopathy.
Surgical excision of the mass was performed and the macroscopic specimen contained an irregular, whitish lesion measuring 2.1 cm.
