Colorectal Surgery Overview

Established since 1989, the Department of Colorectal Surgery at SGH is the only specialized and comprehensive clinical department in Singapore for colon, rectal and anal surgery. • A Genetic Counsellor will provide familial risk assessment to patients who have been identified to be at High-risk of developing genetically linked/ hereditary colorectal cancers.

The Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Centre

  • The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Centre is the first centre in Singapore with a dedicated multi-disciplinary team specially trained to manage Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's disease - two common inflammatory bowel diseases. As these diseases are chronic in nature, they usually require specialist medical care in conjunction with good inter-disciplinary care involving nutritionists, nurses and pharmacists. They provide patients with advice on medications and diet, as well as counseling for patients who require surgery.

  • Patients with established diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's disease or other symptoms suggestive of IBD may be directly referred to the IBD Centre through referrals to the Departments of Gastroenterology and Colorectal Surgery for an evaluation.

Bowel Continence and Pelvic Floor Disorders

Bowel incontinence afflicts many Singaporeans every year and is often associated with other functional problems such as urinary incontinence. While many of the patients with incontinence are elderly, a significant number of younger patients present to us with incontinence due to factors other than natural ageing, example childbirth, diabetes and other medical conditions that weaken the pelvic floor muscles.

An emotionally troubling and frequently inconvenient condition, bowel incontinence can be effectively treated and even cured through a wide range of investigative and treatment modalities.

SGH Pelvic Floor Disorder Service is a multidisciplinary clinic jointly initiated by specialists from SGH’s Colorectal Surgery, Urology and Obstetrics and Gynaecology departments. It serves to help patients with incontinence and other functional problems of the pelvic floor. A one-stop service, its collective surgical approach does away with multiple referrals so patients can seek treatment early.
