Consultation

Clinic consultations are available daily at our Specialist Outpatient Clinic. Appointments can be made through our central appointment hotline.

We provide consultation services for a wide-range of conditions including:

Colon and Rectal Conditions

Colorectal cancer is the most common cancer in Singapore. With an increasing number of patients being diagnosed with the disease every year, the screening and treatment of colorectal cancer has taken priority in the general health of our population.

Unfortunately when symptoms appear, colorectal cancer is frequently at an advanced stage and often incurable. Screening aims to detect the cancer at an early stage, before symptoms appear, as early cancer can be cured by surgery alone. Screening can also help detect abnormal growths arising from the colon, known as polyps, which can be removed to prevent them from turning cancerous. Our experienced clinicians will advise with regards to the various screening and investigative options available.

If a colorectal cancer should be detected, our specialists will then counsel the patient with regards to the various surgical modalities offered by our department for the treatment of their cancer.

Besides colorectal cancer, many other conditions can affect the colon and rectum including:

  1. Diverticular disease
  2. Colitis and Proctitis
  3. Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  4. Polyposis syndromes
  5. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Please seek a consultation session with us should you experience any of the following symptoms which are suggestive of a colorectal condition:

  1. Change in bowel habits
  2. Abdominal bloating
  3. Blood noted on passage of stools
  4. Mucus discharge from the anus
  5. Sensation of incomplete emptying after passage of stools

Anal Conditions

Our department specializes in treating all peri-anal and anal conditions, especially common conditions such as:

  1. Hemorrhoids (a.k.a. Piles)
  2. Anal fissures
  3. Anal skin tags
  4. Fistula-in-ano
  5. Perianal abscesses
  6. Anal warts
  7. Anal cancers

The treatment of anal conditions is a specialized field, as anal and perianal conditions are frequently mistaken for one another. Please seek a consultation session with us should you experience any of the following symptoms:

  1. Bleeding from the anus or surrounding area
  2. Bleeding with the passage of stools
  3. Anal pain
  4. Discharge from the anus or the surrounding area
  5. Anal lumps
  6. Itchiness around the anal region

We will be glad to advise you further on the various investigations and treatment modalities available at the consultation session.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Centre is the first centre in Singapore with a dedicated multi-disciplinary team specially trained to manage Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's disease - two common inflammatory bowel diseases. As these diseases are chronic in nature, they usually require specialist medical care in conjunction with good inter-disciplinary care involving nutritionists, nurses and pharmacists. They provide patients with advice on medications and diet, as well as counseling for patients who require surgery.

Patients with established diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's disease or other symptoms suggestive of IBD may be directly referred to the IBD Centre through referrals to the Departments of Gastroenterology and Colorectal Surgery for an evaluation.

Bowel Continence and Pelvic Floor Disorders

Bowel incontinence afflicts many Singaporeans every year and is often associated with other functional problems such as urinary incontinence. While many of the patients with incontinence are elderly, a significant number of younger patients present to us with incontinence due to factors other than natural ageing, example childbirth, diabetes and other medical conditions that weaken the pelvic floor muscles.

An emotionally troubling and frequently inconvenient condition, bowel incontinence can be effectively treated and even cured through a wide range of investigative and treatment modalities.

SGH Pelvic Floor Disorder Service is a multidisciplinary clinic jointly initiated by specialists from SGH’s Colorectal Surgery, Urology and Obstetrics and Gynaecology departments. It serves to help patients with incontinence and other functional problems of the pelvic floor. A one-stop service, its collective surgical approach does away with multiple referrals so patients can seek treatment early.
